A cohesive XFEM model for simulating fatigue crack growth under various load conditions

نویسندگان

چکیده

This study presents calibration and validation of a cohesive extended finite element model for fatigue crack propagation in ductile materials. The approach relies on separation between plasticity around the tip growth at such that influence driving forces is predicted. implies characterization requires effective Paris parameters. It shown calibrated can capture behaviour materials in-phase out-of-phase biaxial loading as well with an overload.

A cohesive model of fatigue crack growth

We investigate the use of cohesive theories of fracture, in conjunction with the explicit resolution of the near-tip plastic fields and the enforcement of closure as a contact constraint, for the purpose of fatiguelife prediction. An important characteristic of the cohesive laws considered here is that they exhibit unloadingreloading hysteresis. This feature has the important consequence of pre...

A Cohesive Zone Model for Crack Growth Simulation in AISI 304 Steel

Stable ductile crack growth in 3 mm thick AISI 304 stainless steel specimens has been investigated experimentally and numerically. Multi-linear Isotropic Hardening method coupled with the Von-Mises yield criterion was adopted for modeling elasto-plastic behavior of the material. Mode-I CT fracture specimens have been tested to generate experimental load-displacement-crack growth data during sta...

Quasistatic Crack Growth for a Cohesive Zone Model with Prescribed Crack Path

In this paper we study the quasistatic crack growth for a cohesive zone model. We assume that the crack path is prescribed and we study the time evolution of the crack in the framework of the variational theory of rate-independent processes.

Cracking Elements Method for Simulating Complex Crack Growth

The cracking elements method (CEM) is a novel numerical approach for simulating fracture of quasi-brittle materials. This method is built in the framework of conventional finite element method (FEM) based on standard Galerkin approximation, which models the cracks with disconnected cracking segments. The orientation of propagating cracks is determined by local criteria and no explicit or implic...

Fatigue of polycrystalline silicon for microelectromechanical system applications: crack growth and stability under resonant loading conditions

Although bulk silicon is not known to exhibit susceptibility to cyclic fatigue, micron-scale structures made from silicon films are known to be vulnerable to degradation by fatigue in ambient air environments, a phenomenon that has been recently modeled in terms of a mechanism of sequential oxidation and stress-corrosion cracking of the native oxide layer. To date, most stress-life (S=N ) fatig...
